A Cure For The Common Cold Shower

April 11, 2008 | Chicago, IL --For more than 10 years, The Money Pit Home Improvement Radio Show has been providing listeners with savvy solutions to every possible type of home-improvement worry. The popular syndicated program, co-hosted by building experts Tom Kraeutler and Leslie Segrete, is heard on more than 200 stations in all 50 states. Kraeutler also shares his hands-on home-improvement tips as a frequent guest on network television programs and as AOL’s home improvement editor.

 Tom Kraeutler:
"Tankless water heaters
never run out of hot water".

How Tankless Works: “Nothing could be simpler. When you turn on your hot-water tap, the water flows through the tankless unit, gets heated to the preset temperature, and then moves to the outlet for use. When you turn it off, the water heater shuts off, too. It’s called ‘on-demand’ water heating, which is very different from a tank-type unit, where water is brought to temperature, heated and stored, 24 hours a day, everyday.”

Lean, Green Heating Machine: “Rheem tankless water heaters are extremely efficient. All Rheem units have an energy factor (EF) of more than .81 – compare that to a standard tank-type heater’s EF of .62. That translates to lower energy bills for the homeowner and a greener planet for all of us. Tankless units burn very clean and – because they heat only on demand – use far less energy than tank-type heaters. The built-in digital thermostat lets you adjust the temperature easily and immediately, maintaining temperature and controlling energy costs even more.”

Where Luxury Baths Begin: “Tankless water heaters never run out of hot water. With the properly sized unit, you can use multiple fixtures at the same time and still enjoy a hot shower. Tankless is especially ideal for homes with luxury bathrooms. Many people don’t realize how much water it takes to fill a large whirlpool tub. But one bath can empty a 40-gallon tank-type water heater – and without even filling the tub. The new multi-head showers also use more water. With tankless, you can enjoy these spa-style bath fixtures without leaving someone in the cold.”

Endless Doesn’t Mean “Instant”: “How fast the heated water gets to the tap depends on the configuration of your water piping. If your water heater is a great distance from fixtures, the heated water will have to travel that same distance, and you’ll have a wait-time – whether that water heater is tank-type or tankless. If delayed delivery is a problem, you can divide your hot-water supply into zones, shortening the distance from the tankless heaters to the fixtures. One of the great advantages of Rheem tankless water heaters is their small size. The units can easily be installed in a closet or on an outside wall.”

One Size Doesn’t Fit All: “Choosing the right Rheem tankless water heater isn’t difficult, but it is important. Work with your plumber to properly size the unit to your home, based on the peak water demand in your household; that is, how much hot water you will be using at any one time. Got three kids in high school? You’ve got high demand! Homes with two or more bathrooms will naturally need larger units. For homes with more bathrooms or with luxury-style bath fixtures, consider linking two or more tankless units together to work as one unit.”

Installation Costs: “Replacing your tank-type water heater with a tankless unit will cost you twice as much as going with another tank-type. But the benefits more than make up the cost over the long-term. With tankless taking up a fraction of the space of a tank-type heater, you also gain a lot of valuable storage space. Add to that longevity: Tankless water heaters last 15 to 20 years with minimal maintenance, compared with just 8 to10 years for tank-type heaters. Now factor in cost-effective water heating month after month, and you start seeing the savings pile up.”
Bonus Safety Features: “With tankless, the combustion is usually sealed inside the unit reducing or eliminating any carbon monoxide risk. The ability to quickly set and control the water temperature is a valuable safety feature to help prevent scalding accidents for homes with young children and elderly family members.”
